Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Chinese military held military exercises around Taiwan on Saturday (19/8/2023) local time in response to Vice President William Lai’s visit to the United States, which drew criticism from Taipei.
Quoting Reuters, Lai is the front-runner for Taiwan’s presidential candidate in the upcoming January 2024 election. He returned from the United States on Friday, after making an official stop in Paraguay. He had given a speech while in the US.
China strongly dislikes Lai because of his earlier comments that he is ready to work for Taiwan independence. However, on the campaign trail, he has vowed to maintain the status quo and repeatedly offered talks with Beijing.
