Why is it so Much Easier to be a Single Mother in China Now?

Until last year, most women without a husband said it was difficult to be a single parent in China. However, the social changes that are currently taking place are driving changes in public policies that can make their lives easier.

In her apartment on the outskirts of Shanghai, Zhang Meili held her baby in her arms and rocked her left and right. A moment later, Zhang went to earn a living for his baby.

After Zhang leaves for work, the two-month-old baby named Heng Heng will be looked after by his grandmother, who recently moved to China’s biggest city to help raise her grandson.

The absence of a father figure in Heng Heng’s life is still considered a taboo in Chinese society, especially in areas that are classified as rural and on the margins.
